Viral Content: What's In A Meme?

This may come as a surprise to many but a meme came long before the internet. By definition  a meme is  "an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture." Going back to World War II, “Kilroy” was one of the first memes that appeared all over the place. Some called it graffiti, but the same item was repeated so often that it became an icon or a "meme". Kilroy has been all over the world and in every war from World War II through Afghanistan.

Memes range from ideas, behaviors, images, all the way to catchphrases that are imitated.  Some popular memes  include “Where’s the beef?” and “Tebowing,” which is the act of getting down on one knee and praying at any given awkward time (see tebowing.com). Perhaps the best example of “meme marketing” come from Dos Equis Beer. They began their advertising campaign in 2006 starring “the most interesting man” that became known for catchphrases “I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis,” and “Stay thirsty, my friends.” In 2007, Time Magazine named that campaign the top television ad of the year. Now, whenever that meme is customized you will always see a Dos Equis beer in the image - talk about user generated organic reach!
